Cheryl Edwards has bred only Top Quality Dogs for over 25 years and the Terrier temperament has always fascinated her. There are over 30 different breeds of Terriers and as a group they are all alert, intelligent, feisty, athletic, healthy and strong. The modern Purebred Kennel Club Registered Parson Russell Terrier is the absolute epitome of the ideal terrier and should exhibit all these virtues in spades. Stock from Champion Showdogs helps to assure these virtues are present because you cannot show an unsound nor unfriendly Terrier and get away with it for very long.

Unfortunately, we found that the smaller hunt clubs we used to belong to, like the JRTCA, JRTCC and the CJRTA , were (and still are, in our opinion) advocating out-cross breeding for mainly hunting qualities and are not concentrating enough on proper conformation and friendly temperaments. Along with ill- informed, backyard breeders, they create a lot of out-of-proportion, yappy, unmanageable, and overly-aggressive dogs which often give the breed a bad name (eg. the Bad Dog Talk published by the JRTCA Hunt Club).
The Bowery does not subscribe to the "The Bad Dog Talk" and we believe it a very poor rational-ization for what is basically poor breeding. A wise old terrier man once told me that they will all hunt. What he meant was, that if properly trained, a Russell's natural hunting ability will come through. Some breeders/hunters do not want to bother with all the time that training takes so they only breed good hunters to good hunters and what they often end up with is natural born killers.

If the hunting of fur bearing animals is legal in your area and the only reason you want a Russell is to go hunting, then you should contact one of the breeders in a hunt-oriented club and find out what hunting with terriers is all about. Aggressive hunting dogs, ready and willing to kill anything that moves, do not make very good show dogs and they are definitely not bred to be around other pets.

When contacting any Russell breeder ask them if they regularly hunt their terriers? If the answer is yes, ask them if they breed to propagate hunting characteristics? Listen well, then tell them that what you really want is a sound and friendly temperament so the dog won’t attack your kids or kill your other pets. Then, sit back and watch them back track on the aggressive hunting characteristics they have always bred for and start to tell you what nice and friendly pets they will make in spite of their history of breeding for mainly aggressive hunting qualities.
Cheryl has bred and shown more AKC Champion Russells than anyone, anywhere and she breeds only the very best, top winning Parson Russell Terriers in the world but the Bowery's real claim to fame is our sound and friendly temperaments. We insist on it and we breed for it. Our dogs are and always will be people oriented and very friendly. Their uncanny intelligence, natural instincts and inquisitive nature are not to be feared but will be very much appreciated by any fun loving family.
